Composite Elevated Storage Tank (CET)

DEFINITION: An elevated welded carbon-steel water storage tank supported by a large diameter steel-reinforced concrete support tower that extends vertically from the steel-reinforced concrete foundation as a circular concrete support structure/wall and has special horizontal and vertical rustication patterns formed into the exterior of the tower.

POSITIVE USES (when it’s best)

  • Most modern style, some believe the most aesthetically pleasing, and others feel the securest with least liability
  • Areas where future repainting is either limited or more frequent (tight sights or salty environment)
  • Most common & typically most economical style in capacities greater that 1,000,000 gallons

HIGHLIGHTS & ADVANTAGES (over other styles)

  • The Composite Elevated Tank is an attractive, low maintenance and durable structure combining an efficient use of reinforced concrete for the support pedestal and welded steel for a watertight storage tank
  • Cost efficiency is gained by utilizing the valuable strength characteristics of each material; the tensile strength of steel for the water containment vessel and the compressive strength of concrete as the support column for the tank
  • No coating system required for concrete shaft and thus less long-term maintenance (reduced surface area for painting)
  • Interior ladders and piping protects against weather and vandalism and easily allows for pipe insulation
  • Two styles of typical roofs: Conical or Dome
  • Architectural Rustications highlight the concrete column.  These rustications are placed vertically and horizontally at the edge of concrete forms to blend concrete appearance and hide construction joints

SPECIAL FEATURES (bonus part of asset)

  • Unauthorized access to the tank contents and vandal’s graffiti are eliminated by pad-locked doors plus anti-graffiti coatings available; generally used for the first 20 feet of concrete shaft.
  • The shaft can be furnished with a 10′ or 12′ wide (depending on column diameter and the owner’s needs) overhead door for easy access making it possible for the base area of the shaft to have ample storage for valve assemblies, pumps, and equipment or multi-purpose uses such as office space, file storage, and possibly multiple floors with windows.
  • Reinforced concrete pedestal support shaft offers ‘Severe Weather’ protection for nearby employees, personnel, or neighbors as well as an uninterrupted ground silhouette (shadow on the ground).

Multi-Column Elevated Storage Tank (LEG)

Double Ellipsoidal (DE) for 150,000 gallons and smaller or Torus Bottom (TB) for 200,000 gallons and larger

DEFINITION: An elevated welded carbon-steel water storage tank supported by a series of carbon-steel supporting columns and cross braces.

POSITIVE USES (when it’s best)

  • Most economical style in small and medium capacities
  • To gain additional storage capacity in the water system (especially for fire protection)
  • To gain additional pressure in the water system (especially for power outages)

HIGHLIGHTS & ADVANTAGES (over other styles)

  • Traditional elevated storage tank design (Caldwell has been building this style since 1887. In the beginning, they were wooden, then riveted steel, then welded steel with the last wooden tank sold and supported in 1986)
  • Caldwell’s Multi-Column Tank is the most economical means of providing elevated water storage capacity in sizes 1,000,000 gallons and smaller but many factors play into this
  • Most efficient use of steel in the elevated tanks category
  • Normally the center column is a ‘wet riser’, meaning that it is flooded with water from the ground up into the tank
  • Standard designs include a balcony and handrail around the tank with access ladders on the tower column and tank, all of which provide useful exterior access

SPECIAL FEATURES (bonus part of asset)

  • Some believe this style provides the easiest additional future antennae because of its external balcony.
  • In locations where there is an increased risk of seismic events or high winds, additional design requirements can be most cost effectively met utilizing the Multi-Column tank style.
  • Caldwell Tanks has constructed many special capacity tanks and numerous unique design Multi-Column tanks for product display such as Walt Disney’s “Mickey Mouse Tank” in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, Brook’s Catsup Bottle in Collinsville, Illinois, and Brown-Forman’s Bourbon Bottle in Louisville, Kentucky.

POSITIVE USES (when it’s best)

  • Largest selection of standard tank sizes
  • To gain additional storage capacity in the water system (especially for fire protection)
  • To gain additional pressure in the water system (especially for power outages)

HIGHLIGHTS & ADVANTAGES (over other styles)

  • Caldwell’s Pedesphere Tank is sphere-shaped in capacities from 25,000 gallons to 150,000 gallons and is spheroidal-shaped for larger capacities
  • Attractive, sleek, simplistic appearance
  • Beneficial in specific types of soil and seismic conditions
  • The smooth, continuous exterior surface and reduced overall surface area offer future maintenance benefits.
  • Interior ladders and piping protects against weather and vandalism and easily allows for pipe insulation
  • The pedestal shaft and flared base cone diameters are varied to suit individual design requirements and owner conditions

SPECIAL FEATURES (bonus part of asset)

  • The slender single support column, which does not contain water, securely encloses the access ladders and connecting piping to the tank.
  • In larger sized PED’s, the base provides lockable storage for pumps, piping, controls, or extra storage.
  • Some believe this to be the most aesthetically pleasing tank style because of its simple, contoured shape, its small ‘sky-print’ (the equivalent of a footprint in the sky) , and its small ground silhouette (shadow on the ground).
  • SPECIALTY: Additionally, Caldwell Tanks has constructed countless other special designs to meet the requirements of our customers, like the “Exploded Cube” sculpture for Bellarmine University, the “Ad Astra” Sculpture for the University of Louisville, and most recently Hillerich & Bradsby’s “Louisville Slugger Bat” in Louisville, Kentucky serving as the building’s HVAC vent.

Ground Supported Flat Bottom Storage Tank (FB)

Reservoir (RES) when diameter is larger than height or Standpipe (SP) when diameter is smaller than height

DEFINITION: A welded carbon-steel cylindrical water storage tank built at grade-level on a steel-reinforced concrete foundation.

POSITIVE USES (when it’s best)

  • Welded steel ground storage tanks are low cost, flexible in a seismic event or foundation settlement, and can easily be modified or retrofitted
  • Quickest style to construct and works well at higher ground elevations
  • Standpipe designs can achieve additional pressure in the water system (especially for power outages)
  • Reservoir designs can increase storage capacity in the water system (especially for fire protection)

HIGHLIGHTS & ADVANTAGES (over other styles)

  • Smaller ground storage tanks are easier to disguise (harder to find) and can easily be painted specialty designs and attractive logos
  • New epoxy and polyurethane coatings provide long life and require very little maintenance
  • Four different styles of typical roofs: Ellipsoidal, Sphericone, Dome, Low Pitched Cone
  • These reservoirs can accept a light-weight aluminum geodesic dome type of roof

SPECIAL FEATURES (bonus part of asset)

  • Typically, Ground Storage Tanks are the most economical way to provide simple long-term water storage.
  • Tank diameters and heights are varied to meet customer requirements.
  • Ornamental pilasters or other architectural treatments can be added for a unique and beautiful structure.
